The mysterious fort Gradišče

The mysterious fort Gradišče

The hill Gradišče, also known as "Cukovec", is located northwest of the idyllic village of Margečan and south of the picturesque village of Gačice. A mysterious fort is hidden on its slopes. According to the stories of the natives of Gačice, it belonged to the white friars. Legend tells of underground corridors that keep hidden treasures within these walls. Somewhere in the middle of the hill there was an opening known as the "iron gate", which according to legend led to the very top of the fort.

This fort from the 13th century spreads in the east - west direction, above the picturesque valley of the river Bednja. Today, it is covered with a dense beech forest, which gives this historical site an additional charm. The easiest approach to the fortress is from the east, since the other sides of the hill are quite steep, and the southern and western sides are even rocky. Its position provides an excellent control point from which you can see the Bednja river valley and the crossroads of the roads towards Margečan, Gačice and Ivanec. The fort is located at altitudes between 316 and 328 meters on the western part of the hill.

Like a jewel on top of the hill, the "defender tower" welcomes curious visitors. This is the best-preserved part of the fort with dimensions of 11x11 meters and preserved walls between 1.5 and 2 meters high. Inside the tower, you can notice an unusual pit, which is probably the result of a "treasure hunters’ " examination. As you explore this historic site, you will also notice walls covered in moss and tree roots. At one point, the northern wall disappears, giving way to a moat. It is assumed that it was created due to the removal of stones by the locals.

Inside the fort, the terrain is rough, which indicates the collapse of underground rooms. But perhaps the biggest surprise is the "devil's chair", a large natural stone in the shape of a chair located a few tens of meters below the fort on the steep southwestern slope.
