Ivonjski fašink (Carnival)

Ivonjski fašink (Carnival)

In the period between the Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, we enter a time that is especially marked by manifestations called "Shrovetide", which are celebrated through lavish carnivals. In the Ivanec region, these carnival customs reach their peak on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, and the Ivanec carnival, known as the "Ivonjski fašink," is held on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday.

„Gomile“ and „mačkari“ bring an abundance of laughter

Ancient customs bring back memories of the times when Ivanec villages were flooded with merry groups called "gomile." „Gomile“ were often men masked as horses, covered in white sheets or jute with horse masks on sticks. In some places, they acted as two-legged "nitwits", while in other places they imitated four-legged horses.

In addition to the gomile, the houses would also be visited by "mačkari" among whom the most famous were the "newlyweds." They were accompanied by local musicians, and in front of every house they would dance the traditional drmeš or a cheerful polka. The hosts would reward them with doughnuts, a refreshing drink, or a good drop of wine.

Every year, "Ivonjski Fašink" revives the spirit of these old customs on the streets of Ivanec. This atypical carnival gathers a large number of participants, both those who have disguised themselves and those who enjoy the role of observers. In addition to local masquerades, masked guests from neighboring towns, as well as from all over Croatia and abroad, also come to "Fašink". This is a special time when Ivanec blossoms in colors, laughter, and creativity.
