Maize shelling – „Trebitva“

Maize shelling – „Trebitva“

"Trebitva", also known as maize shelling, is a forgotten ancient custom associated with corn harvesting. After the corn was harvested, it would be transported to the barn ("škedenj") or similar area, where the whole community would gather in the evening, especially young men and women.

With socializing and singing, shelling time passes quickly, and young people eagerly await the moment when the light will go out, marking the beginning of "ezdenje" - rolling and throwing on the husks to express their affection to someone. The host would then turn on the light again, marking the end of rolling to reward the youngsters with delicious chestnuts and refreshing must.

This almost forgotten custom survives today only in rare organized shellings organized by the Society of Friends of Folk Customs „Maska“ with special attention and love for tradition.
